A final stretch as this chapter begins to close.

After thirty years in the ED, I find myself returning to an older wisdom.

There is suffering: in patients, in the many staff groups who care for them, in hospitals and health systems, and across society.

There is a path that perpetuates this suffering.

Yet even within these conditions, there are pockets of kindness, excellence, and even joy.

There is another way: a path that encourages such moments not only to appear, but to grow.

In these closing posts, let us explore that path, as a simple offering to compassion at every level: people, systems, society, and beyond.
